10 Thoughts and Meditations

10 Thoughts and Meditations

The first part is a ten week meditation program. It revolves around what has been called "the Ten Thoughts of Inayat Khan". Each week use one as a central focus. Each practice has the "saying", or "thought" and also a corresponding practice done on the breath. The breathing is noted as either [in] or [out]. This is done with the phrase provided (which is different from the "thought").

The 7 day process for each week will be to work with the particular "thought" as the main meditative practice for the first three days and the breathing portion as secondary in time and emphasis. On day 4, balance the time and attention to both the thought and the breath practice. On the last three days, the primary emphasis is on the breath practice.

Starting date: Start when you wish.

Individual or Group? These are individual practices.

When to do: Follow your own schedule. It would likely be best to try to do them about the same time each day to get into a rhythm that works for you.

Follow breath: It is through experience that real results may come. The framework is of understanding, balance, and experience.

How much time to do: Follow you guidance, feeling, intuition. I would suggest starting with about 10 (or so) to 15 minutes (tops). Try not to be either excessive or superficial. Feel when you have attuned and placed sufficient attention for the period you are doing them. If you are led to do more or less, then try to follow that.

1. There is one God
the Eternal, the Only Being, None exists save God.

2. There is one Master
the Guiding Spirit of all souls,
who constantly leads all followers toward the Light.

[in breath] Oh Master

or

[in breath] Guiding One
[out breath] Lead me to the Light

3. There is one Holy Book
the Sacred Manuscript of Nature,
the only Scripture that can enlighten the reader.

[in breath] Oh Love
[out breath] May I know You through Your face

the unswerving progress in the right direction,
toward the Ideal, which fulfills the life's purpose of every soul.

the Law of Reciprocity, which can be observed
by a selfless conscience together with
a sense of awakened justice.

the Human Family, which unites the Children of Earth
indiscriminately in the Parenthood of God.

surrendered in service to God and Humanity,
and which blooms in deeds of beneficence.

8. There is one Object of Praise
the Beauty which uplifts the heart of its worshipper
through all aspects, from the seen to the unseen.

[out breath] Lifts me to You.

9. There is one Truth
the true knowledge of our being, within and without,
which is the essence of Wisdom.

the effacement of the limited self in the Unlimited,
which raises the mortal to immortality,
in which resides all Perfection.

[in breath] Love
[Pause between breaths]
[out breath] HU

You will find a change in approach of both the ninth and tenth meditations. Each one is done on the breath, but the focus or emphasis is even more one the actual experience which then leads to the 'knowing' through being. In other words, we are not focusing so much on the appreciation of the reality behind the words but are taking a step further through experiencing this reality as much as can be with your current, and growing, capacity.

So, on #9, rather than tuning to the breath of the words or using them as a prayer, we step further toward experience. Thus first be aware of the Light/Love/Breath of the Universe - your Beloved, your Ideal; rest in, be of, sense/feel/join/lose separateness to, this Light/Love/Breath and then experience/be.

Now, someone might question that, 'isn't this what we already have been doing'? My answer is, yes, to some degree, but now we go even further toward the Real - to BE of this.

On #10, there is another slight change. This is the holding of the breath between the in and out breaths. With this practice, on the in- breath, breathe in all the Love you can. It is not the word "love" that we are connecting to which we are attuning. Rather it is the experience of love, being of this, as much as one is able.

Here, it is likely that 'you' will first focus on 'yourself' and 'love' as "two". As you rest in this more and more and 'feel', you will have the opportunity to lessen the differences of perception and perceived.

On the outbreath, first use the sound HUUUU aloud. Tune your breath and heart and experience toward the unmanifest. You may find it useful to resonate the sound on the front of the lips and then feel it expand outwardly and upwardly until it is all encompassing - and "you" fly, expand with/as it. Later, use the sound inwardly, on the breath. And finally, may it grow toward being of this - from where it comes and where it goes - IS.

Between the breaths is 'new', for our practice here. It is in this pause that we may find and even 'finer' and 'higher' "realm of self" - the non-self. Feel your way and use a pause which is rhythmical and balancing of the two breaths - in and out - with an ease for yourself. Let this grow and refine.

Going Further

As you know all these aspects are part of one realization. One experiences these qualities, attributes, and realities - Perspectives, more and more as one (you) rises higher. They become more obvious. To go further in living so as to grow to this in your daily life - and then act from this perspective - becomes some of the challenge, the effort. You will no doubt find this growth according to your intention and action.

I will suggest a means to further this process. Should you take this on now, having just finished the 10 weeks of meditations will allow - has the potential for further integration and deepening. Should you feel 'enough' for now; these will be available for you later. And should you be guided - apply the lesson of the second 'thought' - you may find further approaches for youself.

For 10 days follow the practices of breath, 'priming', attuning first by reading and connecting to the appropriate words. Use 1 through 10 in sequence, one each day.

After that period, combine them all in one practice, at one sitting, with just a repetition or remembrance of the words and then a few breaths associated with each statement. Go through all 10 in that manner. Continue this for 21 days.

How many breaths are needed? How long should you sit with this? Only as long as is needed. Follow your own feeling and guidance and get the connection, the unfoldment, the growth, within each phrase and, MOST IMPORTANTLY, with each function, each process, with the understanding of which and the growth toward which that takes place each day within you, through each breath and action. When you open the way for this, you will grow toward it. If it takes one or two breaths each, then that is enough. If it takes longer or more to catch this in the beginning, the give it the attention it needs. Nothing more is needed than to place yourself toward your Ideal, your Beloved, and let yourself be guided in growing to what is already your own reality - only missed for a short period - as you remember, and 're-become'.

Be well and be happy. May the Peace that passes 'understanding' Be through you and may you dwell within the Universe of Love, Light, and Joy that IS - of One.
